I don't know about you but I'd go with basic history... Then introducing them to mobile phones exactly as follows. "This is a mobile phone... I use it to look at pictures of fictional characters and get into fights with people across the world." Sometimes the basics are best.

That's actually the premise of a fanfic I'm writing. The Neuroi came from an alternate Earth that already reached the 2200s, hence why they assumed forms based on aircraft invented after the 1940s.

And yes, the 501st find out how WWI and WWII already went in the parallel Earth.
